What are they building?

Pierce County puts resort-style additions back on the table for Chambers Bay

Less than a year after hosting the U.S. Open, Pierce County is once again taking steps to add a resort-style development to the renowned Chambers Bay Golf Course.

The county is interested in adding “short-term lodging” and a clubhouse, along with other amenities, according to a request for qualifications.

“We’re looking for developers who will know how to take advantage of the natural qualities of the site, integrate what’s already here and complement the unique golfing experience at Chambers Bay,” said Tony Tipton, director of Pierce County Parks and Recreation. “Chambers Bay deserves facilities that are at least comparable to other championship caliber golf courses.”

The county offered an opportunity to develop similar amenities in 2008. However, the effort flopped due to the recession.

“Financing hospitality projects during the recession was extremely challenging and limited the ability of developers to move forward with their proposals,” Tipton said. “We believe the financing markets have improved enough to warrant another attempt to bring needed amenities to Chambers Bay.”

The county wants to find a partner to design, finance, construct and operate the development. The selection process will be done in two phases; the first will include qualification statements from development teams, due by March 4.

The Chambers Bay Golf Course is part of the Chambers Creek Properties, 930 acres of open space that includes two miles of shoreline, two-and-a-half miles of forested canyon, 6.5 miles of trails, and two playfields. It drew thousands of visitors last summer when it hosted the U.S. Open.

The site already has sewer, water, power, and natural gas. Land use entitlements have already been obtained. That will make building on the site a relatively quick process, once a developer is selected.
