Hometown Hero: Jenny Granger

Jenny Granger, WSECU's Hometown Hero, October 2014

It might look like a regular school bus rolling through the neighborhood on a sunny summer day, but take a close look and you’ll realize you’re looking at Jenny Granger’s Book Café – a gutted school bus that’s been transformed into a library on wheels. Knowing the importance of summer reading, Jenny Granger, a local librarian, decided to create the Book Café for kids in the Snohomish School District.

Each week during the summer months, Jenny rolls up to designated bus stops to offer neighborhood kids books which have been donated or purchased with grant money. Whether its chapter books, picture books, young adult books, informational books or novels – all the books are free for the children to take home and read, or keep if they want to!

It’s Jenny’s hope that these kids will find out reading a book can be a fun and memorable part of their summer, just like swimming, playing with their friends, or riding a bike. Knowing many kids simply won’t make it to a library, she brings the books to them!

After a full summer of putting books in kids hands, and smiles on their faces, KIRO Radio and your community credit union, WSECU are proud to honor Jenny Granger as a Hometown Hero and award her with $2,000 as a way to say thank you for all you do.
