NY mother guilty in fatal salt poisoning proclaims innocence

NEW YORK (AP) — A woman convicted of killing her son by poisoning him with salt in his feeding tube at a suburban New York hospital says she’s innocent.

Lacey Spears tells CBS News’ “48 Hours” (http://cbsn.ws/1SFlZEK ) she didn’t poison 5-year-old Garnett Spears.

Spears is an Alabama native who lived recently in Scottsville, Kentucky. She was convicted of murder last year and is serving 20 years to life in prison.

Prosecutors say she sickened her son because she had a bizarre need for attention.

Spears says in the CBS interview she loved her son and “didn’t harm him in any way.” The interview is scheduled to air Saturday.

A New York judge said at her sentencing she suffers from Munchausen by proxy, now known clinically as factitious disorder imposed on another.

Spears denies having any type of mental illness.
