Ignoring religious distinctions

In covering the recent and horrifying school shooting in Rio de Janeiro none of the most prominent U.S. media outlets stressed the recent Islamic conversion of the 24-year-old killer who slaughtered a dozen children while carrying a note in his pocket full of extremist Muslim materials.

Yes, warped personalities raised in other faiths may also commit hideous crimes, but it’s hard to imagine a recent, devout convert to Christianity, Judaism or Buddhism who would express commitment to his new faith through mass murder. By the same token, the Muslim holy day, Friday, is powerfully associated with violent, bloody outbursts around the world, while today’s worshippers never come out of church on Sunday or Synagogue on Saturday, lusting for blood and mayhem. Islam, in other words, is significantly different from other faiths but the media refuse to take note of those distinctions.
