TBTL with Luke Burbank

Just One More Thing

New York Times columnist David Carr died on Thursday night. The guys did a great job eulogizing him and there’s little praise I could add. What is astonishing is how similar my life has been to David Carr’s. We were both drug addicts who pulled ourselves up out of the pit of despair and enjoyed high profile, lucrative writing careers. His happened to be with the New York Times and mine is with the TBTL blog.

It’s about to get dark so wake up the kids and read this to them in a creepy voice. The larger issue on the table is whether foul play was involved in Carr’s death. We all know Fresh Air’s Terry Gross DOES NOT like to work a full five day week. So it’s always a little suspicious to me when a celebrity dies “late Thursday night.” I imagine that when a week is about to pass without a day off the Fresh Air staff meeting is all about reviewing the interview archives and seeing who might not be in tip-top shape. Queue up the old tape for tomorrow and put an eager, murderous intern on a train to NYC to dispatch the celeb.

I don’t want to put Andrew on Eat Street (he’d probably love that) and I know he’ll tell you he doesn’t have a cockatiel in this fight but I’m sure he knows the inside story on this future Forensic Files episode. All of these white, middle aged, fancy public radio show people are in constant communication. Not long ago KCRW killed Huell Howser just so the Cuyahoga Clam could slap on some old interview footage, swing by Langers for a bite and spend an afternoon at the DMV. Probably. You didn’t think I’d figure this out, did you? Oops. The truth is a dirty little monster, Hodor Kotb.
