Noon guest Weds – George Karl

Our show is fairly successful these days – and, with the exception of certain weasel politicians, we generally are able to land guests that we pursue.

It wasn’t always that way. So I will be forever grateful to those who were unimaginably kind to me early in my career.

I talked last week with new Hall-of-Famer Dave Neihaus – and told the story of how he returned my call and met with me when I was a 17 year old kid who dreamed of getting into broadcasting.

Husky coaching legend Don James is another. For two years as a student at the UW, I did Husky football play-by-play for the campus radio station. I doubt if more than ten people ever listened to those broadcasts. But the coach of the #1 team in the nation set aside time every Friday morning to do a coach’s show with me. I’m sure there were hundreds of things he would rather be doing with that half-hour, but he always made time.

And Denver Nuggets coach George Karl also is on this list. In the early 90’s, I was doing morning sports on KING-1090. We weren’t exactly a ratings powerhouse.

The Sonics broadcasts were on KJR. And my station had no budget to pay for a coach’s show. But, for reasons that I still don’t understand, then-Sonics coach George Karl came on the air with me 2-3 times a week for two years. I was an obscure sports guy on an obscure station. It meant an awful lot to me early in my commercial radio career.

I haven’t talked with Coach Karl in over 10 years. With his Denver Nuggets in town, he will join me at Noon on Wednesday’s Big Show. I think I’ll start the interview with a big “thank you”.
