Dori Monson

The hypocrisy of our Dem-controlled state

Dori writes…

A couple of months ago I played for you the audio of state senator Adam Kline confronting Tim Eyman in the state capital demanding an answer to his question: “you want to cut taxes, where would you cut spending?”

I answered Sen Kline’s question on my show the next day. I’d start with the hundreds of millions of dollars that go to one percent for the arts (see blog entry below). I’d eliminate all of the state offices of Asian-American affairs, African-American affairs, Hispanic-affairs, etc. It is against the state constitution for the state to advocate for groups of citizens based on their race or ethnicity.

I’d also privatize state liquor sales, eliminate prevaling wage on construction projects, and on-and-on it goes. We could reduce state government by 30% and no one would notice any difference. In fact, that would put the size of state government at about 2003 levels (adjusted for inflation). And I don’t remember this state being so horrible just five years ago.

My point is, the Democrats who control the state demand to know from people like me where we would cut spending when we advocate for tax cuts. And I always provide an answer.

Here’s my challenge to those same Dems: This weekend they announced a plan to send rebate checks to low income residents in the state. They call it a “sales tax rebate”. I call it a “welfare check”.

This scheme will cost the state $110-million/year. Plus it will cost $7-million/year to implement including adding 44 full-time state workers. The plan is insane, but I’m going to play along with their little game. Since they always ask me where I would cut spending when I advocate for a tax cut, I’m going to see if any of them will answer the same question. Since YOU are advocating a $110-million/year tax cut, where are YOU going to cut spending?

Will they answer the question they always ask of me? Or will they prove themselves to inconsistent? I will do everything I can to get the Dems behind this “sales tax rebate” on my show Monday. Will they step up? Or be tremendous hypocrites? Listen-in Monday – I’ll have the answer.
