Rainier Beach family ups ante in fight against robbers

A Rainier Beach family tired of repeated break-ins is taking things into their own hands plastering the neighborhood with home surveillance images and offering a $500 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

“I’m going to put up some posters around the area with his picture and my offer of a reward, and I’m hoping that maybe one of his friends are desperate for $500, or a family member who’s frustrated with his behavior will turn him in,” said robbery victim Theresa Allender in an appearance on 97.3 KIRO FM’s Ross and Burbank Show.

Allender says in three years, they’ve had two break-ins, and one attempted break-in, that actually occurred while she was in the house with her 1-year-old.

Surveillance cameras managed to capture an image of a man peering into the home around the time of the most recent break-in in July. Allender has been sending the video to local media outlets and is posting the image around the neighborhood.

Allender says the thieves are bold.

“Our alarm system was actually going off while he was robbing us,” says Allender. “ADT is the alarm system that we have. ADT called and alerted us that the alarm was going off. We said, ‘Call the police. It shouldn’t be going off.'”

She says there does seem to be one factor that distinguishes homes that get robbed and homes the robbers pass by.

“If you go up and down my street in this neighborhood, everybody has been robbed or their stuff has been vandalized except for those with dogs.”

Allender says for their home, they’re not taking any more chances.

“I’m going to get my brother’s dog, who is a pit bull mix, and he’s very vicious.”
