How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Thursday

U.S. stocks hardly budged Thursday and finished with a mix of small gains and losses. Banks and airlines rose on strong first-quarter reports, and consumer products companies struggled.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average picked up 18.15 points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,926.43.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 0.36 points to 2,082.78.

The Nasdaq composite fell 1.53 points to 4,945.89.

For the week:

The Dow has risen 349.47 points, or 2 percent.

The S&P 500 has added up 35.18 points, or 1.7 percent.

The Nasdaq has jumped 95.20 points, or 2 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 501.40 points, or 2.9 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 38.84 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 61.52 points, or 1.2 percent.
