SEATTLE (AP) — A hearing has been scheduled for Friday in a lawsuit against Seattle’s food waste law.

Seattle law firm Pacific Legal Foundation believes the new law that tells garbage collections to inspect people’s trash allows the government to invade the privacy of its citizens.

The lawyers have requested summary judgment in Bonesteel v. City of Seattle.

The new food waste law was designed to prohibit residents from throwing food and compostable paper in the trash. Pacific Legal Foundation filed a lawsuit in July, challenging the new law on behalf of a number of local residents.

The food waste law requires garbage collectors to monitor the contents of garbage cans and to report owners to Seattle Public Utilities when “significant amounts” of a can’s contents are made up of recyclables or food waste.
