TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — The prosecution has rested its criminal case against State Auditor Troy Kelley, who is accused of money laundering and other charges stemming from his work before he was state auditor.

The News Tribune reports (http://goo.gl/anw1iz) the prosecution rested Wednesday.

Kelley’s defense attorneys then asked the judge to dismiss the bulk of the case, saying the trial has contradicted September indictment allegations and that a rational jury couldn’t find Kelley guilty based on what was presented.

U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Leighton disagreed, saying there’s an abundance of evidence of possession and concealment of stolen property and on money laundering counts.

Prosecutors say Kelley illegally collected millions in fees from homeowners and moved the proceeds among various accounts to hide the money.

The defense says the money was Kelley’s to keep.

Closing arguments in the trial could come next week.
