France promises tough security for Cannes Film Festival

PARIS (AP) — The French government says it’s ramping up security to protect the celebrities and 200,000 attendees at the Cannes Film Festival next month.

Authorities fear potential attacks on major events after the Nov. 13 extremist attacks on a Paris rock concert, stadium and cafes that killed 130 people. The country remains under a state of emergency.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve met with the Cannes mayor Tuesday ahead of the May 11-22 film festival, and said in a statement that “all means necessary will be deployed to ensure the highest level of security possible, in the context of the terrorist threat that everyone has on their minds.”

That will include increased security checks and better coordination among police and celebrities’ private guards. A special Cannes security exercise is expected later this month.
