Georgia sheriff sued for death of restrained jail detainee

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia sheriff is being sued in federal court by the family of a 21-year-old Savannah man who died in a cell after he was shocked by a Taser while strapped to a restraint chair.

The family of Mathew Ajibade (ah-jih-BAH-dee) filed a civil suit Tuesday against Chatham County Sheriff Roy Harris and others working at the county jail.

Ajibade died hours after he was jailed for a domestic fight Jan. 1, 2015. Jail video revealed a violent fight with deputies trying to book him. One deputy later shocked Ajibade four times with a Taser while he was in restraints.

A jury last November acquitted two deputies and a nurse of manslaughter charges, but found them guilty of lesser crimes.

Sheriff’s spokesman Pete Nichols said he had no immediate comment.
