Job growth in retail and professional services accelerates

WASHINGTON (AP) — Job gains accelerated in September in some sectors, including retail and professional services, despite a slowdown in overall job growth.

Retail added 23,700 jobs, up from 4,400 gained in August. Fueling the jump were auto dealers and general merchandise stores.

Professional services continued to strengthen, adding 31,000 jobs in September. The sector includes legal, accounting, engineering and administrative services.

Manufacturers, though, shed 9,000 jobs. Mining employment, which includes oil-related jobs, fell by 10,000 amid low oil prices. Since peaking in December 2014, the sector has lost 102,000 jobs.

Overall, U.S. employers added an unexpectedly weak 142,000 jobs in September. The unemployment rate was unchanged at 5.1 percent.
