Ciscoe’s Tips of the Week: Fall is a great time to plant trees

Ciscoe’s Tips of the Week:

Fall is a great time to plant trees and shrubs because newly planted trees and shrubs will grow deep root systems all winter long, making them better prepared for summer heat the following year. Work a handful of organic starter fertilizer into the hole in the planting process.

Plant spring blooming bulbs. Most bulbs look best planted in clumps and should be planted three times as deep as they are wide. Remember to work a cup of organic bulb food into the holes before planting.

To keep squirrels from digging up your tulip bulbs, plant the bulbs 12 inches deep. This only works if you have well-drained soil. Otherwise you can try planting in a basket of chicken wire, or buy a wiener dog to scare the squirrels away!
