A listener planning an anniversary weekend in Seattle
asked the Seattle Kitchen staff where she should take her
husband for a great breakfast. Hosts Tom Douglas, Theirry
Rautureau, and Katie O came through with traditional and
out-of-the-box breakfast options in the city.

For those looking for a classic American breakfast,
Douglas recommends Vera’s in Ballard.

“I was there yesterday. I had whole wheat toast, a country
style sausage patty, a little sauteed spinach, that’s my
breakfast,” said Douglas. “Vera’s in Ballard is just a
classic Americana breakfast.”

Another spot that Seattle Kitchen has heard raves about is
Portage Bay Cafe.

“If you want more of an upscale breakfast, kind of fancier
ingredients, a little bit more expensive, Portage Bay Cafe
is so popular,” said Douglas. “That place seems to really
have it going on. People love it.”

Rautureau, being French, said he goes for the bakery.
“I love going to a bakery, and getting a big bowl of Cafe
au lait,” said Rautureau. “Very traditional European I guess.”

But the whole team agrees that breakfast shouldn’t be
limited to eggs, pastries, and pancakes.

“You have to take breakfast out its box and think about
what’s available,” said Douglas. “You’re talking dim sum.
I like pho for breakfast.”

“I go into the ID and I go to the Pho Bac,” said Katie O.

Rautureau said he was pleasantly surprised that Ba Bar
near Seattle U serves breakfast starting at 7 a.m.

“I went right in there and got a bowl of pho. I was like,
‘Oh, this is a cool breakfast.'”

Katie O and Rautureau also recommended one of Douglas’
restaurants, but he tried to take it out of the running.

“We don’t want people thinking we’re home showing in
here,” said Douglas.

But in case you’re curious, the Tom Douglas restaurant
Rautureau and Katie O picked as their favorite was Lola.
