How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Friday

U.S. stocks took small losses in quiet trading Friday as energy companies sank with the price of oil, but the market finished higher for the week.

On Friday:

The Dow Jones industrial average gave up 28.97 points, or 0.2 percent, to 17,897.46.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index slid 2.05 points, or 0.1 percent, to 2,080.73.

The Nasdaq composite index declined 7.67 points, or 0.2 percent, to 4,938.22.

For the week:

The Dow gained 320.50 points, or 1.8 percent.

The S&P 500 added 33.13 points, or 1.6 percent.

The Nasdaq rose 87.53 points, or 1.8 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 472.43 points, or 2.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 36.79 points, or 1.8 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 69.19 points, or 1.4 percent.
