Democratic leaders criticize ad in Maryland Senate race

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic leaders of the House and Senate on Thursday denounced an advertisement being run on behalf of one House Democrat against another in Maryland’s hotly contested Senate primary.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has stayed neutral in the primary between Reps. Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen. But she said the pro-Edwards ad should be pulled because it’s a misrepresentation. The ad claims Van Hollen supported a loophole for the National Rifle Association in a campaign finance disclosure bill.

“It’s just a total misrepresentation,” Pelosi told reporters.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who has endorsed Van Hollen, also called for the ad to be pulled.

“These kind of tactics are just out of bounds, and they have no place in this campaign,” Reid said in a statement.

The White House already had asked a political action committee supporting Edwards’ Senate bid to pull the advertisement on gun control, which used President Barack Obama’s image.

Pelosi argued the campaign finance bill was a good piece of legislation and noted both Edwards and Van Hollen are opposed by the NRA.

The ad shows Obama tearing up while talking about Connecticut’s Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.
