Laws shouldn’t be taking kids from their families

A foster family in Los Angeles had their 6-year-old removed from the family because of her native American blood. A similar situation occured this month in Seattle. (AP)

Los Angeles County authorities removed a 6-year-old girl from her longtime foster family earlier this week.

Why is this news? Because of the girl’s ethnicity.

The girl, who goes by Lexi, is 1.5 percent Choctawwas and was removed under the Indian Child Welfare Act, a federal law that aims to give tribal governments a voice in child custody cases involving American Indian children.

Dori says this isn’t an isolated incident and will share a local story later today.
