Michael Medved ‘wholeheartedly’ recommends everyone watch ‘Zootopia’

It is rare that a film comes along that you can wholeheartedly recommend. This is a flat out wonderful film. Zootopia gets four stars. (AP)

It’s very, very rare that a film comes along that you can wholeheartedly recommend. This is a flat out wonderful film. Everyone in the family can go and see, and should go and see. It is hilarious, inventive and stunning to look at.

It is a four-star film. It is hard to imagine that there will be a film this year that is better animated.

If you want to look at it this way – most people won’t think of it this way – but there is a message. And the film’s set up is basically that message: The film focuses on a world in which all different members of the animal world have learned how to talk and drive cars, but also to live together. Predator and prey are living together in peace. That is disrupted by some kind of evil conspiracy where they are leading the predators to revert.

That gives the movie an edge because the two intrepid souls who solve this mystery are a fox and a bunny police officer.

The cast is packed with stars. Jason Bateman plays the fox. Ginnifer Goodwin is the bunny. Shakira is a gazelle. Idris Elba plays a water buffalo who is the police chief.

Everything about this film works. In particular, people should watch out for the sloths…who work at the DMV.

I don’t recall hearing louder laughs in a theater than at this film. It is so clever at every turn. It’s the kind of film serious and complex enough that people can write Ph.D. dissertations about it someday. But at the same time, if you are 4 years old, you will be delighted.

And it turns out – tiny spoiler alert – for people who are a little bit concerned about corruption and corny capitalism, there is a message for that, too.
