How the Dow Jones industrial average fared on Tuesday

U.S. stocks dropped on Tuesday for the first day in five as investors assessed company earnings and the latest corporate deal news. More evidence of weakness in China’s economy also unsettled the market.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 49.97 points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 17,081.89.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index dropped 13.77 points, or 0.7 percent, to 2,003.69.

The Nasdaq composite declined 42.03 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,796.61.

For the week:

The Dow is down 2.60 points, or less than 0.1 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 11.20 points, or 0.6 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 33.86 points, or 0.7 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 741.18 points, or 4.2 percent.

The S&P 500 index is down 55.21 points, or 2.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 60.55 points, or 1.3 percent.
