5 Father’s Day gifts for the king of the lawn

SPONSORED — If you’re looking to make Dad really happy this Father Day’s, it’s time to back away from the necktie. While traditional gifts of clothing, cologne or books might please some dads, if your pops is the outdoor type, there’s bound to be a better gift – or five – out there.

As the patriarch of the family, show Dad you appreciate his power, and nothing says that better than a shiny new power tool.

The riding lawn mower

Dad’s contribution to family life isn’t cheap. In fact, according to Time, the average dad’s household duties add up to be worth more than $20,000 a year. One of those duties: mowing the lawn. Help Dad look forward to the task with a state-of-the-art mower. According to Bob Christofferson, head groundskeeper at Safeco Field, Husqvarna’s M-ZT52 zero-turn mower is the way to go.

“I love this mower,” said Christofferson, the quality of cut is phenomenal. It’s comfortable, and it’s a zero-turn, so very easy to maneuver, and it’s fast.”

The lawn tractor

Father’s Day might land right as summertime arrives, but this gift will delight Dad long into the autumn and for years to come. A lawn tractor, which can handle jobs as simple as mowing to those as tough as hauling a load of firewood uphill, will keep Dad at work in the yard for hours on end. Consumer Reports recommends Husqvarna’s YT46LS as a good buy for lawns up to two acres, which includes locking rear differential, reinforced cutting deck, and hydro-static transmission

The chainsaw

What dad doesn’t love the sound of a chainsaw roaring to life? This year, give Dad the gift that keeps on giving — and cutting. A chainsaw is a popular choice for the man of the house — and yard. From cutting firewood to trimming trees, Dad will find endless uses for his new toy, er, tool. Just make sure Dad also has the protective gear he needs when operating that bad boy. Consumer Reports recommends wearing eye and ear protection, gloves, tight-fitting clothing, boots and a hard hat.

The trimmer

Dads with green thumbs also tend to have sore backs and aching muscles. Take the grunt work out of yard work by giving Dad a lightweight, powerful trimmer. From taking out weeds or controlling ivy and blackberry bushes to trimming boxwoods and edging up the lawn, a good trimmer will save Dad’s sanity — and his back.

The backpack blower

Think Dad has a big job raking up the backyard? Consider the task of cleaning up an entire baseball field. According to Christofferson, a backpack blower is the way to go.

“I’m actually getting one of these to use at Safeco Field,” said Christofferson. “With a blower, as with any other piece of outdoor power equipment, it’s important to think of the jobs you’re planning to use it for. For clearing out big areas fast, you can’t beat (a backpack) blower. If you’re using it to clean your gutters out and plan on being on the roof with it a lot, I would recommend a hand-held blower. You don’t want to fall off the roof with this strapped on your back.”

When it comes to Dad’s special day, make the sentiment count — and last for years to come.
