5 better ways to spend your ride to Sea-Tac airport

SPONSORED — Whether business or pleasure takes you from the Pacific Northwest, it’s pretty inevitable that you’ll be making the trek to Sea-Tac Airport sometime soon.

But if spending an afternoon in rush-hour traffic, followed by a frustrating quest for parking and a mad dash through security doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, Sound Transit’s Link light rail is likely your best option. Plus (bonus), that airport commute can be a great time to get a few things done.

1. Prepare for that presentation

Believe it or not, Americans make more than 405 million business trips per year, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. And when you’re scrambling to make that early morning commuter flight, your work might take a backseat to other, more pressing issues, like watching the road.

Traveling by Link light rail can give you a head start on that meeting or presentation. Take the commute to go over your notes, practice your speech or brush up on a new client.

2. Make last-minute travel arrangements

There are a few things every traveler inevitably forgets until he or she is about five seconds away from boarding his or her flight. From calling your credit card company to notify them you’ll be leaving the country to upgrading your rental car, your nondriving commute is the perfect time to take care of those last-minute travel details, or simply find the best restaurant in your destination city.

3. Catch up on email

While communication in the digital age might be lightning fast, it still requires a time commitment. In fact, according to The Huffington Post, the average American office worker spends one-quarter of each business day reading and responding to email. With the time you spend traveling to the airport, you could make a big dent in that list of unread messages.

4. Read (say what?)

Back in the old days, people used to enjoy reading books — and magazines and newspapers. But according to the National Endowment for the Arts, only about half of Americans nowadays actually read for pleasure.

Your Sea-Tac commute gives you the perfect excuse to catch up on your book club assignment or finally indulge in that best-seller you’ve heard so much about. Hey, if a trashy gossip magazine is more your speed, who’s to judge? The train is full of strangers, anyhow.

5. Reconnect with your people

If you’ve ever felt like your family is running in a dozen different directions, you’re not alone. According to A-Better-Child.org, one-quarter of parents report eating fewer than four meals per week with their families.

With that kind of deficit of family time, any time spent catching up with kids and loved ones is a welcome privilege. Spend your airport commute reading together, playing a game or simply talking.

Life is short, and commutes are long, so if you’re wasting time stuck in traffic, take those hours back. The Link light rail system now runs from Westlake in the heart of downtown Seattle all the way to Sea-Tac, and starting in 2016, you’ll be able to get to the airport from UW Station and Capitol Hill, too. For a cool $3 and with departures every 7-15 minutes, that extra time comes cheaper and easier than you ever thought.
