Community Charity

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has been named Bonneville Seattle’s Charity of the Month for March, because of their dedication to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy.

The AFSP is a multifaceted organization made up of esteemed scientists, dedicated survivors of suicide loss, people with mental disorders and their families, and an expansive network of business and community leaders.

The non-profit organization coordinates hundreds of events in communities across the country, raising millions of dollars each year to support their work, both locally and nationally. The AFSP advocates for social change, supporting policies that contribute to reducing and preventing suicides nationwide.

Through their programs, the AFSP has taken a leadership role in identifying and encouraging treatment for people who have the highest risk for suicide. The AFSP educates the public by disseminating vital information about suicide and its prevention by mobilizing a national network of grassroots advocates who alert officials to policies and legislation that can help prevent suicide.

While AFSP does not provide direct services, such as counseling or running a crisis hotline, they reach hundreds of thousands of people every year as the go-to source of expertise on suicide and its prevention.
